Poverty is a complex problem that cannot be addressed with quick,
short-term single-tier solutions. It takes all sectors working together to find the answers!
Opportunities Waterloo Region works on
projects in such a way that they are owned by the communities for which they are
developed, ensuring their sustainability, community commitment and support.
To better understand the way we work, please read the description of the YES
initiative listed at the end of this page.

- A Comprehensive Community Initiative for Poverty Prevention & Reduction.
Opportunities Waterloo Region has combined all of its initiatives into a single
comprehensive community initiative. Comprehensive community initiatives are multi-faceted,
multi-sectoral plans to reduce and prevent poverty, by tackling the complexity of poverty.
They also strive to increase community engagement. This community plan places all of
Opportunities’ initiatives within a framework for change. This ties together the root
causes of poverty, the strategies to address them, and the specific initiatives that will
accomplish the strategies.
- Opportunities,
with the support of the Ministry of Health Promotion, Ministry of Culture, Tourism, Citizenship and Immigration
(and Canada Summer Jobs) is conducting an environmental scan of recreational and leisure
opportunities for youth 6-17 years of age in the Region of Waterloo’s three cities and four townships.
- Recognizing the many benefits of community gardens to neighbourhoods, families, and
individuals, The Diggable Communities Collaborative formed in May 2008 as a partnership between the Region of Waterloo Public Health, Opportunities
Waterloo Region, and the Community Garden Council of Waterloo Region. The Collaborative has 18 months of funding provided by The Ontario Trillium
Foundation with additional support from Together 4 Health. The key objective of the Collaborative is to strengthen the network of the 40 community
gardens in the Region through policy advocacy, sponsorship and partnership development, as well as through aiding and supporting new and existing gardens.
- A web based application that integrates supply chain economics
and corporate social responsibility to achieve community benefits. The conceptual
framework of the SPP is a partnership of business, government and community
working together on social and economic issues to create healthy communities.
The SPP operates as a hub for purchasers of goods
and services, the businesses suppliers and employment service providers.
It is an innovative and effective tool that is currently online in Vancouver,
Toronto and Winnipeg, with other ten communities exploring possible development.
- This initiative addresses the issues facing the working people
who live in poverty. It is a multi-prong, multi-sector community
collaborative effort with the goal of ensuring that every working to make ends meet
individual/family has the resources in place so they have the opportunity to
gain a sustainable livelihood.
- It is a different way of thinking about the priorities for
development. It puts people at the centre of development. The SLA is
about building on a person's existing strengths as well as creating new ones.
- By supporting youth and their families during the early school years, Youth
Education for Success (YES) is
intended to reduce school dropouts and increase graduation rates. Now that
a strong, committed collaborative is formed, Opportunities has shifted
its focus of support to being a working group member with an eye on the future
replication in other neighbourhoods.
