Human Resource Booklet

"Creating Opportunities: Using Human Resource Practices to Build Your Business and Your Community"  (2000)

The OP2000 Human Resource Booklet "Creating Opportunities: Using Human Resource Practices to Build Your Business and Your Community" arose from the need to provide practical examples to the business community about how to make a contribution to poverty reduction in Waterloo Region. And the most practical way to do that is through human resources policies and practices. The booklet is a compilation of examples of businesses from across the region with sound human resource practices that have a positive impact on poverty and create opportunities.

"Opening up avenues of opportunity for people and business are what best practices are all about. Human Resources is a dynamic and active part of a successful business strategy and it is important to understand the impact HR practices have on the success of people in the workplace." – OP2000 Human Resource Booklet

Summary

The commitment to people and your community can lead to increased opportunity for your business. It can also open doors of opportunity for the people who live in this community. Through an examination of Human Resource Practices found in different businesses within Waterloo Region, "Creating Opportunities: Using Human Resource Practices to Build Your Business and Your Community" highlights the versatile and dynamic role HR plays in opening doors of opportunity for the people of Waterloo Region. Whether it is through corporate volunteerism, a commitment to training and development or an understanding that people make businesses successful, examples of the benefits realized through a commitment to people are illustrated by the varying practices found in this area.

The companies featured in this booklet include both local and national businesses. Whether small or large, they demonstrate that a commitment to the community in which they operate makes good business sense. Companies such as KPMG, S-S Technologies, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada, Equitable Life of Canada, Kuntz Electroplating and Elmira Poultry are just a few of the profiles included and the diverse and individual HR practices found in these businesses create opportunity, enabling success for individuals and subsequently for the business and community as a whole.
