Leadership Roundtable’s Central Position Statement:
“That the local community and government at all levels (federal, provincial and local) adopt a poverty reduction plan with set targets, timelines, a dedicated budget and ongoing monitoring.”
Federal Poverty Reduction Strategy (FedPRS):
At the Community Conversations Series event on March 18, 2008, we distributed a document called: Talking Points – A Poverty Reduction Strategy for Canada. View it here.
Provincial Poverty Reduction Strategy (ProvPRS): The provincial government has released their long-awaited Poverty Reduction Strategy. This is a positive step forward in poverty prevention and reduction across the province. View the full strategy here or the highlights
here.
In addition, a wealth of information on poverty reduction efforts by the provincial government can be found on their website www.growingstronger.ca.
This strategy is based in large part on the recommendations that communities across the province submitted to Deb Matthews, Chair of the Cabinet Committee
on Poverty Reduction. Two reports were created by Opportunities Waterloo Region. “Talking Points: A Poverty Reduction Strategy for Ontario,” a summary of recommendations made by various groups,
can be viewed here. “Report Back to Contributors” contains feedback from the January 2008 Community Conversations Series event,
and can be viewed here.
Opportunities Waterloo Region has submitted a response to the Provincial Poverty Reduction Strategy, which can be read
here.
Region of Waterloo and a living wage policy!? To see the August, 2008 staff report on the implications of a living wage policy for the Region to the
Community Services Committee, click here! Staff recommended further research is needed as a next step. The CSC directed staff to develop a work plan for
such research and present it at the November, 2008 CSC meeting. FYI - Living wage policies are voluntary and any organization can implement one! For
